Short Term Scientific Mission Dublin region

September 2013

Subject:

The subject of the STSM in the Greater Dublin Region is to work on the horticultural dimension of urban agriculture in the reference region as a preview to preparing the Working Group Meeting to be held from 11-13 September, 2013 at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, (Dublin).

Horticulture is a very significant element of agricultural production in the Greater Dublin region. However, the most recent profile of the horticultural industry dates from 2001.  The purpose of the STSM is to devise an up to date profile of horticultural activity in the peri-urban area, mapping the productive lands around the city, detailing the nature of production and its sale into local markets, estimating the value of the industry to the local economy, identifying niche industries within horticultural practice such as organic farming, and farmers markets that source produce locally, etc.
